SHARPSBURG – The Antietam National Battlefield will once again host its Annual Memorial Illumination this weekend. Organizers will place 23,000 luminaries across the historic grounds, each one representing a soldier killed, wounded, or missing during the Civil War's Battle of Antietam. The solemn tribute takes the form of a driving tour, with visitors invited to follow a set route through the battlefield between 6 p.m. and 10 p.m. Local officials encourage arriving early, as traffic is expected to be heavy for this moving event.
