About Thurmond Depot
Thurmond Depot is a historic two-story railroad depot in the small town of Thurmond, West Virginia. Built in 1904 to replace the original 1899 structure, it served as a vital hub for the Chesapeake & Ohio Railway during the coal boom of the early 1900s. Today, the depot operates as a National Park Service visitor center for the New River Gorge National Park and Preserve, featuring exhibits and historic furnishings that interpret the region's rich past. The depot remains an active Amtrak train stop and is restored to its early 20th-century appearance. Visitors can explore the depot, take self-guided tours, and experience the unique history of this former boomtown.
