About Freer Gallery of Art
The Freer Gallery of Art, established in 1923, is part of the Smithsonian Institution and is located on the National Mall in Washington, D.C. It houses one of the largest collections of Asian art and antiquities in the United States and, together with the Arthur M. Sackler Gallery, forms the National Museum of Asian Art. The gallery features works from East Asia, South Asia, Southeast Asia, the Islamic world, ancient Egypt, and the Near East, as well as a significant American art collection including works by James McNeill Whistler. The museum was founded by railroad magnate Charles Lang Freer, whose vision led to the preservation and display of Asian and American art in a major city. Visitors can access the Freer Gallery via the Smithsonian Metro Station and enjoy its unique architectural style inspired by Florentine Renaissance revivals.
